CASE

06/14 is World Blood Donor Day, but statistics in Brazil indicate that the country does not have the ideal number of donors. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that between 3% to 5% of a country's population be blood donors, but among Brazilian inhabitants only 1.8% are donors.

During this period of the year, the country experiences a drop in temperatures and then the holidays, which cause a drop in donor attendance: blood stocks fall, on average, by 30%.

Any drop in a blood bank can cause an imbalance in the operating flow of hospitals, for example. When a patient is admitted to a hospital, whether for elective surgery or an emergency procedure, we do not know if he will need blood and, if so, how much it will be. For that, there is no predictability. The blood bank must always be stocked to serve the emergency.

During the holiday season, accidents on the road increase and health units need a greater blood supply, contributing even more to an unfavorable scenario.

  Solution

The June Red campaign of the Eu Dou Sangue Movement for Brazil sought to raise public awareness of the importance of this act by illuminating buildings and public monuments with red light.

One month, one color and one health issue highlighted. In June, red was chosen, to remind the population of the importance of blood donation.

Results of

The program helped to minimize the drop in blood donation in the winter. Unfortunately because of the cold, the rain, donations fall about 5% in winter, but in 2016 stocks remained stable because of the repercussion of the campaign in the media.

The initiative today is known as "I Give Blood for Brazil". And Law No. 16,389, of March 15, 2017, established the Red June as an official event on the calendar of the State of São Paulo.

Although we know that the number of donors can and needs to grow, there has never been so much talk about blood donation. The hemorrhage of the State of São Paulo signals that donations increased by 30% during the movement and after it, in the period from June to August in relation to the same period of the previous year.
